Electric Moons

2024 – 2025

«  Electric Moons » serie

This collection represents a series of stylized lanterns, using an acrylic painting technique rich in texture and relief, set against a dark background, evoking the night. The white lanterns, perched on copper or gray-green masts, emerge as sources of light and warmth. The contrast between the colors symbolizes an opposition between darkness and light, between mystery and revelation. The artist seems to want to convey the idea of light in the midst of darkness, a metaphor for the search for meaning or truth in moments of uncertainty. The marked texture could also suggest that light is never perfect but shaped by our experiences.

This series of stylized vintage lanterns, inspired by the built environment of Los Angeles set against the night sky, was inspired by a chance encounter with American writer and historian India MANDELKERN. After discovering Vincent Cruège’s work at a Bordeaux wine estate during the summer of 2024, the writer and artist forged a friendship. The series is inspired by a confluence of influences : Vincent Cruège’s interest in art deco and his connection to world-renowned luxury glassmaker, Lalique, as well as Mandelkern’s book, Electric Moons : A Social History of Street Lighting in Los Angeles (2023).
